Healthy Mycelium, Harmless Spots, or Contamination?

Is that mold, or healthy mycelium?

An unfamiliar patch on a home mushroom grow kit can be worrying. Appearance can offer clues, but a photo alone cannot diagnose contamination. Color, texture, changes over time, and the growing conditions all matter. If you are uncertain, pause fruiting and contact support rather than guessing.

Visual check: what are you seeing?

  • White growth: Mushroom mycelium can look cottony, dense, or threadlike, depending on the species and conditions. White growth alone does not prove a block is healthy, because some contaminants can also start white.
  • Yellow or amber droplets: These may be mycelial metabolites, sometimes associated with stress. They are not proof of contamination, but they are not an automatic all-clear either. Check for spreading discoloration, excess moisture, and deteriorating texture. Do not wipe or disturb a suspicious area.
  • Brown or discolored patches: Drying, handling damage, and species-specific changes can alter appearance. Do not assume an unfamiliar mark is harmless bruising.
  • New colored or powdery growth: Green, black, pink, or other unexpected growth is a warning sign, especially if it spreads. Color does not identify the organism or establish whether it is safe.
  • Wet breakdown: Unusual slime, mushy areas, or pooling liquid alongside deterioration warrant stopping the grow.

Compare the block with the instructions for your mushroom species. Photograph a questionable patch in natural light without opening or disturbing it, and record when you first noticed it. Do not wait for a large patch before taking action.

Smell checks: observe, do not sniff

If you notice an unusual sour, rotten, or musty odor during normal handling, stop and treat it as a warning sign. Do not put your face near a suspect block, deliberately inhale from its bag, or open it to perform a smell test. A normal odor does not rule out contamination, and an odor cannot identify a particular mold or bacterium.

When to continue fruiting

Continue following the species-specific instructions when growth matches the expected appearance and there are no concerning changes. Keep checking the block without unnecessary handling. Slow or absent pinning alone does not diagnose contamination; moisture, temperature, and airflow can also affect fruiting.

When to pause fruiting

Pause if you see an unexplained patch, unexpected colored growth, deteriorating texture, or notice an unusual odor. Keep the suspect kit separate from other grows and away from food-preparation areas, children, and pets. Do not open, scrape, brush, cut out, or spray a suspicious area. Contact support before resuming. If you monitor changes while awaiting advice, leave the block contained; monitoring is not a reason to keep fruiting or harvest from it.

When to discard

Discard a block with obvious mold-like growth, spreading suspicious patches, slime or decay, or persistent foul odor. There is no reliable surface-percentage threshold that makes a contaminated block safe. Do not try to salvage it by cutting away the affected patch, and do not eat mushrooms from a suspected contaminated kit.

If the block is already bagged, keep it closed. Contain it in a sealed outer bag without shaking or disturbing it and remove it from your indoor growing area. Follow local waste guidance. Wash your hands and clean the growing area afterward. Anyone with asthma, mold allergies, or a weakened immune system should avoid handling a suspect block.

When to contact support

Contact NoCap Mushrooms if you are uncertain about a mark, if a newly arrived block appears damaged or abnormal, or if the grow is deteriorating. Send your order number, the mushroom species, arrival and opening dates, growing conditions, and clear photos of the whole block and the affected area. Mention any odor already noticed, but do not deliberately sniff the block to gather information.

Photos help us assess the situation and recommend next steps, but they cannot confirm the organism or guarantee safety. Keep a suspicious block contained while you wait; if it is clearly deteriorating, photograph it without disturbing it and discard it safely.
