Your Fruiting Block Arrived. Now What?

Your mushroom block is here. Now comes the fun part: giving it a comfortable place to grow and watching the first mushrooms take shape. You do not need to turn your home into a laboratory, but a little attention to moisture, airflow, and your mushroom variety goes a long way.

This guide is a starting point for our 10lb Mushroom Fruiting Block (Pre Orders), available in Lion’s Mane, Gold Oyster, and Blue Oyster varieties. Follow the instructions supplied with your block first: bag openings, temperatures, and care can differ by variety.

1. Unbox and check before you cut

Remove the shipping packaging promptly and keep the growing bag intact until you have read your instructions. Confirm the variety you ordered and look for shipping damage, leaks, or an unexpectedly open bag. Take a clear photo if anything seems off.

White fungal growth is often part of a colonized block, but appearance alone cannot confirm that a block is healthy. If you notice unusual spreading discoloration or an unpleasant odor during normal handling, keep the bag closed and contact support before starting. Do not open a suspect bag to sniff it closely.

2. Pick a suitable growing spot

Choose a clean spot with indirect light, away from direct sun, heaters, and strong drafts. Put the block on a washable tray so nearby surfaces stay protected. Avoid enclosed cupboards and locations beside household waste.

Use the temperature guidance for your chosen variety rather than a single target for every block. Gold oysters, blue oysters, and Lion’s Mane do not all prefer the same conditions. If your instructions do not specify a range, ask support before choosing a very warm or cold growing area.

3. Open only as directed

Wash your hands and use a clean tool if your instructions call for a cut in the bag. Make the specified opening rather than stripping away the whole bag or adding extra cuts. The bag helps the block retain moisture, and unnecessary exposure can dry it out.

If mushrooms have already begun forming when the block arrives, take a photo and ask support how to position the opening rather than cutting through the developing cluster.

4. Balance humidity with fresh air

Mushrooms need moisture, but keeping the block soaking wet is not the goal. Follow the supplied misting directions, use clean water, and avoid leaving standing water around the block. Check conditions regularly rather than misting on autopilot: a dry room and a humid room will need different attention.

If your setup uses a humidity tent, allow the ventilation described in your instructions. Do not seal a fruiting block inside an airtight container. Keep it out of the direct blast of a fan, which can dry tender growth.

5. Watch for the first small mushrooms

The first visible growth may look like tiny bumps or small clusters at the opening. As they develop, keep conditions steady and avoid touching them repeatedly. A daily photo from the same angle is an easy way to track progress.

There is no universal countdown to the first harvest. Variety, shipping conditions, and your growing environment all affect timing. Use the timeline supplied with your block, and contact support if you pass that window without progress.

6. Adjust carefully, not all at once

If growth looks dry, review moisture and placement. If oyster mushrooms develop unusually long stems and small caps, limited fresh air may be one contributing factor. Neither observation is a diagnosis on its own. Check your variety’s instructions and change one part of the setup at a time so you can see what helps.

If a suspicious patch spreads or an unpleasant odor develops, pause fruiting and keep the block separate from other grows while you contact support. Do not taste mushrooms from a suspect block or try to rescue it by cutting away a questionable patch.

7. Harvest for your variety

Harvest cues differ. Oyster clusters are generally picked before the cap edges become strongly upturned; Lion’s Mane uses different cues as its hanging teeth develop. Follow the variety-specific harvest directions rather than waiting for every mushroom to reach the same shape or size.

Use clean hands and tools, refrigerate harvested mushrooms promptly, and cook them before eating. Only eat mushrooms from a known edible culture that appear sound; when in doubt, ask for help rather than guessing.

When to contact NoCap Mushrooms

Reach out if your block arrives damaged, the growing instructions are missing, you are unsure where to cut, growth stalls beyond the supplied timeline, or you see concerning changes. Include your order number, mushroom variety, arrival date, photos of the whole block and the area of concern, and a short description of your temperature, misting, and airflow setup.

Photos help us understand what you are seeing, but a photo alone cannot conclusively identify contamination. Our fruiting block product listing offers replacements for issues; contact us so we can help with the next step.

Planning your next grow? Explore the 10lb Mushroom Fruiting Block (Pre Orders) and choose Lion’s Mane, Gold Oyster, or Blue Oyster. Start with the right instructions, keep the setup simple, and let the mushrooms do their thing.
